Why Stats are Scary

It’s that time of year again!  Yes, it’s Halloween, but it’s also time to evaluate your performance this season on the golf course.  Most people don’t want to be bothered with stats which seems like laziness but maybe there are deeper things at play here.  Maybe people are just actually scared to find out the truth about their golf games.

It’s understandable to be hesitant when it comes to keeping stats from rounds of golf.  Taking 15 to 20 minutes to review your round and remember the pain points that highlight what you need to spend more time doing in practice is understandably something we might want to avoid.  It can seem much easier to follow the path that emotions have you take and go practice the things that you want to practice. However, this can be disconnected from what is most important to practice.

In addition, once you have stats you have a sense that there will need to be a deeper dive into why the stats are what they are. This means an assessment or evaluation which will surely highlight areas of weakness. I believe this is one of the key differentiators between great players and those who continue to struggle to break through, the willingness to have areas of weakness revealed and analyzed.  The best don’t shy away from it!

What does this all mean?  It means that you should review your playing statistics from this year and  then look to have yourself evaluated by an expert, especially in your weak areas.  Then it’s time to accept what is found in the evaluation process and understand the plan.  The prescription will undoubtedly entail thousands of reps in various drills designed to improve the efficiency of the movement and help you to acquire greater skills.  You must be up to the task!

Happy Halloween!

Practice Smart!
