The Red Flag That Separates Good Coaches from Great Ones

If you’re an athlete—or the parent of one—there’s one question you should always ask before working with a coach:

 “Do you screen your athletes?”

Here’s why it matters. Without a proper screen, a coach is just guessing: guessing at what’s safe, what’s effective, and what will actually move you forward. And when it comes to training, guessing is the fastest way to end up injured or plateaued.

A quality screening process reveals the full picture, including:

  • Movement limitations – where your body struggles to perform
  • Injury history – and how to prevent repeating the same setbacks
  • Stability and balance issues – the foundation for power and speed
  • Neurological movement patterns – how your body actually coordinates movement
  • Strength and power output – how strong and explosive you are relative to bodyweight

With this information, training becomes personal and precise—not random. It sets a baseline so progress can be tracked, and it builds a plan that matches where you are right now while targeting where you want to go.

At our facility, we use the 5 Elements of Success Evaluation and the Player Development Index (PDI) to do just that. These tools allow us to:
✔️ Select exercises tailored to your body
✔️ Coach you with cues that match your movement style
✔️ Pinpoint the single factor that will unlock your next level of performance

The takeaway is simple: screening is the RED FLAG.

  • If a coach screens you, you’re in good hands.
  • If they don’t… think twice.

Because great coaching isn’t about throwing the hardest workout at you—it’s about building the right workout. One that’s built for you, based on science, and designed to keep you progressing safely and effectively.
