Every golfer knows the season doesn’t just magically come together once summer hits. It starts now.
Before you start worrying about scores, take a little time to make sure your equipment is actually ready to go. A simple preseason check keeps your numbers tight, your distances predictable, and your confidence high when you’re standing over the ball.
Here’s an easy way to get it dialed in.
Start With the Grips
Your grips are your only connection to the club, so if they feel slick or worn after the offseason, you’ll notice it right away in your control and consistency.
If your grips feel shiny, smooth, or you can’t remember the last time they were replaced, it’s time. Fresh grips restore control and consistency instantly. Plus, they feel great and it’s like a brand new club!
Check Loft and Lie Angles
Clubs bend over time. Travel, range mats, and normal play slowly move specs out of position.
Even a degree or two off can mean:
- Left or right misses even when you feel you put a good swing on it
- Distance inconsistencies. Why did my 7 iron go as far as my 8 iron?
A quick loft and lie check ensures your irons are back to your specs which means your gapping yardages and dispersion will be more consistent. Details matter. Always has.
Evaluate Your Wedges
Wedges wear faster than any other clubs in the bag. The grooves dull and the leading edges round off. Spin drops without you realizing it.
Ask yourself:
- Are you still controlling the trajectory? If the ball is launching too high with the appropriate technique then it’s probably the grooves.
- Are bunker shots reacting properly?
- Is there consistent yardage separation between wedges?
If your wedges are more than two seasons old and you practice often, they’re likely costing you shots. The usual recommendation is to replace or take a look at new wedges when 75 rounds of golf has been played including practice sessions.
Run a Full Bag Gapping Session
Do you know how far each club goes? This is important to know all the time. Before the season begins and especially during the season.
A proper gapping session gives you:
- True carry numbers
- Realistic spin windows
- Consistent yardage separation (10–15 yards between clubs is ideal)
This is also where you uncover hidden problems:
- Two clubs going the same distance
- A 20-yard gap you didn’t realize was there
- A long iron you never actually hit
If there’s a gap, fix it. Hybrid. Utility iron. Different loft. We can bend the loft stronger/weaker or the lie angle flatter or more upright to get your necessary output. There’s almost always a solution.
Consider What the Bag Is Missing
The key is making sure your equipment matches your game.
You may need:
- A higher-lofted fairway wood for better launch or to hold a green
- A driving iron for tighter tee shots
- A different wedge setup for proper spacing
Don’t add clubs randomly. Add them with purpose.
Refresh the Essentials
This is simple but often overlooked:
- Replace worn golf shoes for proper traction and stability
- Stock up on fresh gloves for consistent feel
- Play a ball you’ve actually tested — and commit to it
Consistency in the small things builds consistency in scoring.
