Last week, Rafa Cabrera-Bello did something at Winged Foot that is not seen too often, he put 13 new clubs into play the week of a Major Championship. It is not uncommon for players to put a new club or two in the bag at a Major, new wedges for fresh grooves or a freshly launched driver. But changing your entire set except for the putter is a pretty rare occurrence. So how did he fare? Rafa finished T28 with rounds of 68, 70, 74 & 78 at one of the toughest tests of golf in the world. The change came as Titleist launches their new line of TSi woods and according to Titleist Tour Rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, the changes were a long time coming. They were urging Bello to change his equipment to produce a higher ball flight, similar to the other top players in the world. It’s no surprise that the Spaniard prefers the lower trajectory that may be effective in windy and firm conditions. However, at Winged Foot players seem to benefit from a higher ball flight, which is why he decided to make the switch. Van Wezenbeeck told GOLF.com “the presence of Bello’s swing coach Sean Hogan at Winged Foot early in the week helped Bello see the light.” This is the power coaching and equipment working together for a common goal!
