Be Your Own Best Coach

As you know we talk a lot about process, not focusing on the results, and enjoying your journey. How often have you said this to some one that you know, someone that you are trying to help; it doesn’t matter if it is about golf, school, business or relationships. How often have you said to others that it is ok to make mistakes, it is ok to challenge yourself, if you aren’t making mistakes you aren’t trying, and finally a big one – don’t be afraid to fail! As a coach to someone you care about, would you ever tell them something that would ultimately break them down to a point of no return or despair, the answer is NO! You, me and most human beings are too sympathetic to hurt someone that much, at least not intentionally!

What does this have to do with your journey? EVERYTHING! Every day you are your own coach. Most of the time as our own coach we are harder on ourselves than on anyone else. If you wouldn’t hurt anyone else’s feelings or tear them down, then why would you do that to yourself? This isn’t to say that it is wrong to be tough on yourself or your friends, but DO NOT tell yourself how bad you are. You may tell yourself how you weren’t happy with an outcome, and in that case you should assess the reason why you did not perform as well as you would have liked. Be your own best coach by giving yourself the best advice you have ever given to someone else. Coach John Wooden had a great quote we all can learn from, “I am not as bad as I think I am, I am not as good as I want to be, I will continue to work to be my best everyday!”

As you are gearing up for the “off” season to prepare yourself for next golf season work hard daily to be your best, and when you make mistakes accept them for what they are, efforts towards improvement! Every day that you struggle the closer you will be to your best. Be your own best coach, encourage yourself, and when you find yourself frustrated with yourdevelopment know that you are closer to making your breakthrough!

As always,
Enjoy Your Journey!
