Give Up Control to Gain Control

To get the ball into the hole in the fewest shots possible, controlling your golf ball is the name of the game.  However, sometimes trying to do just that can be counterproductive.  Many golfers will try and steer their ball around the course, which actually gets in the way of being able to hit a target with pinpoint accuracy. Since the NBA Finals are this week, let’s use Steph Curry as an example as he is one of the greatest shooters of all time.   Imagine if he tried to guide the ball into the basket, instead of trusting his shot and letting it go.  Let’s apply that to your golf game.  Trying to control your ball consciously while your swinging inhibits your ability to produce a consistent swing.  Instead, having target focus and letting your subconscious send the ball where it needs to go gives you the best chances at actually delivering the club head with pinpoint accuracy.  In the words of the great Bruce Lee, “be like water”, give your mind complete control over your body so it can send the ball to the target.  Next time you are practicing try this exercise, take your driver, pick a target and hit five drives nearly as hard as you can.  Then, hit 5 more trying to consciously steer the ball to the target.  The results will be just what you need to give you the confidence to give up control to gain control.
