A New Era

I am sure many of you saw how Bryson DeChambeau dismantled the famous Winged Foot Golf Club last week to win his first major title in convincing fashion.  Not many players win majors by 6 shots or more as doing so requires something completely different than the other players in the field.  Let’s look at what Bryson displayed last week and what the future has in store for him.

Bryson led the field in strokes gained off the tee with tremendous ball speed and a plan of attack that emphasized taking advantage of that distance and using the angles and slopes of the green to execute out of the rough in a way that many didn’t think was possible.  Above all else Bryson’s performance at Winged Foot is the culmination of years of hard work in the gym and with his diet, countless hours engaged in deliberate thoughtful practice, tournament preparation, and constant analysis of equipment all fueled by an insatiable desire to push the boundaries of what is possible in the game of golf.  You could say much of this about any PGA Tour player, but what sets Bryson apart is the curiosity and the willingness to experiment in the endless journey of improvement.  As Bryson said before the US Open started he considered the event just another marker on his journey.  We haven’t seen this level of commitment to continued improvement in golf since Tiger Woods.

It remains to be seen where Bryson goes with his relentless commitment to push the boundaries and as he said, “challenge the status quo.”  One thing is for sure, a lot of people will tune in to see how he attacks Augusta National in November.  I am not betting against him.
